How To Train Your Cat to Use the Toilet!

The smell, mess and time needed to change a litter box makes it a dreaded task. In as little as 3 weeks, you can train your cat to use the toilet and get rid of the litter box for good!

A younger cat is more easily trained, but as long as your cat uses a litter box you can train them to use the toilet. You can buy one of the many kits available, but you can make your own and save some money.

The first thing you’ll want to do is move the litter box closer to the bathroom. The cat needs to be able to see the litter box from it’s original location. Depending on the distance from the litter box to the bathroom, you may need to do this in steps.

If you just suddenly move it all the way in the bathroom, he may not be able to find it. If you keep the litter box in the bathroom, then you’ve already got a head start!

Place a small stool or box under the litter box to raise it off of the floor. It should sit securely on what ever you use, your cat won’t want to use a litter box that shakes.

Whenever you see the cat using the litter box, be sure to praise him or even reward him with a treat. The next step is to move the litter box to the toilet seat.

This is going to be very inconvenient, each family member will have to remove and replace the litter box to use the toilet. If you’re going to get the cat to use the toilet, the litter box has to always be put back on the toilet seat.

Give your cat time to get comfortable with using the litter box while it’s on the toilet seat. In the meantime, start looking for a bowl or pan that will fit perfectly into the toilet seat and hang down into the toilet bowl. An aluminum roasting pan will usually work well, but what ever you use add a small amount of litter to it. This will be a familiar scent for your cat, one that he associates with peeing!

Make a small hole in the center of the bowl or pan to allow the pee to drain into the toilet. Every day or so make the hole larger, eventually the cat won’t be able to stand in the pan and will begin to balance himself on the toilet seat! Once you see him doing this, it’s time to remove the pan!

Toilet training your cat doesn’t only involve training him! You will also have to train yourself and any other household member. Your cat may be able to use the toilet, but he’s not going to be able to raise the seat or open the bathroom door!
