How To Choose The Pet That Is Right For You
Choosing the right pet for your family involves a lot of careful consideration. It’s not as simple as just picking one that you like or think is cute! For both you and the pet to have a long, happy relationship, you must be compatible with each other!
Like any other relationship, having a pet requires commitment, patience, love and compromise. Don’t get any pet unless you’re willing to take on the responsibility of caring for him for years to come!
One of the first things you should consider is the size of the pet. That cute little puppy is going to grow up fast and he’ll need room to play. Choose a pet that will fit in well with the size of the home you’ll be providing for him.
If you have children, you’ll definitely want to make sure that you choose a pet that is tolerant with kids. There are many pets that are gentle and patient with small children. A small pet that is easily injured isn’t a good choice for smaller children.
Most people know that dander can be a problem with allergies, but you may also be allergic to the dogs or cats saliva and urine! If you or a family member suffers from allergies, choose a dog or cat that has low levels of dander. The amount of dander that the pet has actually has nothing to do with the amount of hair it has! Some hairless breeds of dogs produce a lot of dander, while some dogs with long hair produce very little!
If you work long hours or travel a lot, it may not even be the right time to have any pets. But, if you really want a pet then make sure that you’ll be able to have someone to take care of it when you’re not there.
Some breeds of dogs are more independent than others and can deal with being left alone. While there are other breeds that hate being by themselves and may destroy your home in retaliation!
Do you have other pets already? If so, then you’ll need to consider their safety and well being when choosing
to add another pet to the family. A cat or a bird dog probably isn’t the best choice for a family with birds! But, there are breeds that are very easy going and get along well with most other animals.
Your pets activity level should match yours! If you spend most of your time indoors, don’t choose a dog that needs lots of exercise or is highly energetic. An active dog is more suited for families that do lots of things outdoors.
Another factor in choosing a pet that is often overlooked is noise! If you live in an apartment dogs that are known to bark or howl and birds may not be a good choice. You’ll probably have angry neighbors knocking on your door when they’re not able to sleep.
When you take on the responsibility of any pet, there’s going to be financial costs. Consider the cost of food, vet visits, shots and other items such as cages, dog houses and toys before committing to any pet.
Choosing a pet that is less prone to illness can save a lot on vet bills. And, even taking your pet for regular check-ups can save money in the long run. An illness that may cost hundreds to cure might be prevented if it’s caught in the first stages.
Gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters or other small cage animals can be the perfect choice for small homes or apartments. They can be very affectionate pets and the cost of their care is usually quite minimal.
If your lifestyle has you sleeping more of the day than you do at night, choose a pet that has the same sleep schedule. While most people find the scent of ferrets very undesirable, they’re a great choice for a “night owl” since they sleep most of the day and are wide awake at night.
Once you’ve decided that you want a pet you should try to find out everything you can about the particular pet your interested in.
Never buy a pet on impulse! Purchasing a rabbit, duck or baby chick for your child for Easter may make your child’s eyes light up, but before long you won’t be able to hold it in the palm of your hand anymore!
Studies have shown that having a pet can have both emotional and physical benefits. But, having the wrong pet can cause a lot of stress and aggravation for you and the pet!
